Nigerian striker Brown Ideye has said that he has a good understanding with strike partner Emmanuel Emenike whenever they both start in the Super Eagles team.
Ideye
was hung out to dry and he was singled out for criticisms after wasting
a lot of goalscoring opportunities at the 2013 Confederations Cup in
Brazil, where Nigeria failed to advance past the group stages.
Emenike missed out through an injury and Ideye led the lines for Nigeria in that tournament.
The Dynamo Kiev player said that he was under immense pressure to
perform particularly because he wasn't playing alongside Emenike.
"Maybe if Emenike had played at the 2013 Confederations Cup, I would not
have faced as quite as much pressure as I did. Since Emenike was not
there, the other person people looked upon to perform was me,” Ideye
told supersport.com.
He added that the “pressure to perform” got to him and he failed to score a single goal in the tournament.
“When a lot of people put pressure on you to deliver and you don’t, you
feel like you are the worst footballer on earth,’ he said.
Stephen Keshi who was angry with the missed opportunities, rued the
absence of Emenike from the tournament adding that he wouldn't have
missed chances the forwards missed at the Confederations Cup.
“He (Keshi) is right because Emenike has proved that he can do a lot in
the national team. Maybe, if Emenike was in Brazil, I would not have
been under too much pressure,” Ideye added.
