3 Signs You're Dehydrated

Shutterstock
Ask any fitness expert to list a couple of common workout roadblocks, and dehydration will likely always make the cut. It's a killer! You need water to exercise—you thrive on it—yet so many women spend their days dehydrated. So, what gives? It could be because, when it comes down to it, you may not even know exactly when you're dehydrated. To solve that problem, we asked Greg Justice, an exercise physiologist at AYC Fitness in Kansas City and author of Mind Your Own Fitness, to list the top signs you need to get way more H20 happy:
You Have a Headache
Unless you're chugging water 24/7, your body is constantly losing fluid. That means you're also losing essential salts like sodium and potassium because those are in the fluids you're losing. Now get this: That salt loss actually changes the chemical makeup of your blood. Your brain, in turn, is super sensitive to that change—and it's that sensitivity that triggers a headache. Make sense? The headaches get even worse, too, depending on how much water you lose. "The more water you lose, the more your blood volume drops, which causes less oxygen flow to the brain," says Justice. "That causes your blood vessels to dilate, which can make your headache feel even worse." Moral of the story: Not enough water equals headache central.
Your Pee is Extra Yellow
Eek…kinda gross, right? But it's true. The reason this happens is that your urine is over-concentrated with waste. "When you're fully hydrated, the waste is easily flushed out in a more efficient manner," says Justice. But when there aren't enough fluids in your body, the waste isn't as easily flushed out, so it stays there.
You're Constipated
Again, kinda gross. But again, totally true. And the reason is somewhat similar. See, water helps move your waste through your colon and out of your body. "But if that water isn't there to begin with, it won't be able to move your food waste onward and outward as efficiently," says Justice. Hence the constipation.

You're Eating More Trans-Fat Than You Think You Are

You’re getting more trans-fat than you think you are in processed foods, a new study shows. Many foods labeled trans-fat-free in fact do contain some of the artery-clogging gunk, a team at the New York health department found.
A check of 4,340 top-selling packaged foods shows that 9 percent of them contain partially hydrogenated oils — the chemically hardened oils that are the source of trans-fats. Of of these, 84 percent proclaimed themselves free of trans-fats, with “0 grams."
“This labeling is cause for concern because consumers, seeing the 0 g trans-fat on the Nutrition Facts label, are probably unaware that they are consuming trans-fat,” Jenifer Clapp of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and colleagues wrote in their report.
Many studies have shown that trans-fats, produced when liquid fats are made to be solid like butter, are as damaging to arteries as saturated fats such as butter and lard. “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tentatively determined that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the main dietary source of industrial trans-fat, are not ‘generally recognized as safe’ for consumption,” Clapp’s team writes in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease.

The Russians Are Coming: Putin's End Game in Ukraine?

It would appear that the proverbial elephant — or perhaps in this case, the bear — in the living room has finally been revealed.
The Kremlin may still deny it, but the evidence of a Russian invasion, or at least an incursion, into Ukraine is compelling: NATO spy photos, eye-witness accounts from fleeing Ukrainian soldiers, and even a ranking member of Vladimir Putin’s own human-rights council, all seem to point toward the presence of Russian soldiers — several battalions’ worth and with sophisticated weapons — fighting with the rebels and slowing, if not reversing, the recent Ukrainian military’s momentum on the battlefield.
Even Alexander Zakharchenko, the separatist leader of Donetsk, the regional capital, proudly told viewers of Russian state television Thursday that 3,000 to 4,000 Russian soldiers had come to fight in eastern Ukraine, many during their own furloughs.

Ukraine president: Russian forces have entered

But if the once unthinkable is fact, then what is the Russian president really up to now? Opening up a new front in the war, the rebels say they are pushing — with Moscow’s help — to the Sea of Azov, in Ukraine’s southeast, to give any future breakaway entity there access to a warm-water port.
Some Ukrainians fear that Putin’s real goal is a land corridor linking Russia and Crimea, the strategic Ukrainian peninsula Putin annexed in March after the Moscow-friendly government in Kiev fell.
A number of NATO officials have spoken of Putin’s "grand plan": nothing less than resurrecting the Soviet Union, an ambition that — in Putin’s mind — would make a pro-Europe, pro-NATO Ukraine, looming on his very doorstep, a threat that must be removed or at least seriously weakened.

Russian military units moving in a convoy formation with self-propelled artillery in the area of Krasnodon, Ukraine, well inside territory controlled by Russian separatists, in this satellite image captured on Aug. 21. There is confidence the equipment is Russian, since Ukrainian units have not yet penetrated this far into separatist controlled territory.
But other voices are not as shrill. Fyodor Lukyanov, the Editor of "Russia in Global Affairs" and the Chairman of Russia’s Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, believes that Putin actually lacks a big strategy, but excels at quick, reactive tactics. He told NBC News that the Russian incursion into Ukraine is all about pressuring Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to reach an agreement. "To let him know that the war is unwinnable," Lukyanov said, "and to accept direct talks with the separatists."
"That simply will never happen," insisted Ukrainian analyst Sergei Strokan, who works for the Russian radio station “Voice of Russia.” He said the likelihood of Poroshenko sitting down and negotiating with the rebels — the Ukrainians call them "terrorists" — would be like former President George W. Bush bargaining face-to-face with Osama bin Laden. "Never. It would be political suicide," said Strokan. "To recognize the rebels you would have to wipe today’s Ukraine off the map and replace it with some new, non-existent Ukraine."

Putin, ever the shadowy former KGB officer, rarely speaks or writes about his end-game in Ukraine, besides some platitudes about protecting the Russian minority there and wanting a prosperous and unified neighbor. Which makes all the speculation about Putin’s true intentions all the more intriguing … and probably wrong.
But Ukrainian government officials like Andrei Kuzmenko, acting ambassador to the United Kingdom, have no doubt about what drives Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. "He can’t bear to see, and will do everything to prevent, a thriving, free, democratic country like Ukraine on his border," Kuzmenko told NBC News. "For the simple reason that, if we Ukrainians can do it, so could the Russians … at his own peril."

Michael Brown Shooting

 Image: More protests in Ferguson
Police in Ferguson, Missouri, did not file an “incident report” on the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Michael Brown because they turned the case over to St. Louis County police almost immediately, the county prosecutor’s office tells NBC News.
Critics and news media outlets have questioned why Ferguson police released an incident report from a robbery in which Brown was a suspect, as well as security video showing the robbery, but not the report on the shooting of the unarmed 18-year-old a short time later by Officer Darren Wilson.
The reason, according to the office of St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch, is that it doesn’t exist.
The St. Louis County police department presumably did file an incident report, but any such documents will not be made public until a grand jury investigating the officer-involved shooting concludes its investigation, according to officials from the office who briefed NBC News on the case.
The grand jury reviewing the facts in the case is impaneled until mid-September, but could continue to deliberate beyond its term, in which case their sole focus would be on the shooting of Brown. At the conclusion of its investigation, the grand jury will decide whether to indict Wilson in connection with the shooting.
The St. Louis County prosecutor's office stressed that it is cooperating with the concurrent federal investigation of Brown’s death and is sharing information with FBI agents who are looking into whether his civil rights were violated.

7 Reasons Your Memory is Bad

memory-loss
You forgot your car keys at home (for the umpteenth time!), you could barely remember what you had for dinner the other night, and you missed your doctor’s appointment (again!). Does this sound like a familiar story to you? If this is how things go almost every single day, then you must be wondering why this is so when you’re barely in your 40s! Contrary to what some people think, poor memory does not always occur during old age. In fact, you’ll be surprised to know that some kids tend to be forgetful at times, and this is certainly not to be taken lightly. So, whether you’re 16 or 60, and you struggle with memory decline, it’s best to know common reasons your memory is bad – and do something to prevent things from getting worse.
The following are some of the typical causes of poor memory among individuals, which may also lead to reduced cognitive functions.
1. Depression
When people are depressed, it may be difficult for them to concentrate and recall things because of their preoccupation with their negative feelings. Unfortunately, no one is exempted from depression, and this can occur even to young children who are frequently exposed to stressful situations. Several instances that can cause people to be depressed include the death of a loved one, lack of appreciation from family members, and a few other reasons. Negative emotions including anger, fear and anxiety can also add to one’s forgetfulness and inability to concentrate. No matter how hard they try, concentrating and remembering things can be a major challenge because of their fixation with negative emotions and painful situations in their life.
2. Mental Confusion
Most people get into the habit of multi-tasking with the hopes of getting things done as quickly as possible. While this may seem as an exciting and challenging activity for some, it can eventually lead to mental confusion and stress. The moment their mind is overloaded with things to do, it’s possible for them to just lose it and experience mental confusion. With a confused mind, poor memory may arise and the only way to resolve this is by learning to focus on one thing at a time. Keep in mind that your brain can only handle so much, which means exposure to more ideas can lead to mental pollution. Once this occurs, memory decline may follow because of mental stress.
3. Inability to Express One’s True Emotions
There are individuals who have trained themselves to hide their true feelings out of fear, shame or pride. They tend to neglect the emotional aspect of their life, so they are no longer in touch with their feelings and thoughts. Although this practice helps people perform well in their jobs or studies even when their life is in shambles, this may be causing serious drawbacks to their memory. The brain is made up of two parts – the left and the right. The left portion of the brain governs the logic while the right facilitates artistic and emotional functions. When one uses both sides of the brain regularly, they are able to obtain a sense of balance in the way they think. This goes without saying that a strong and powerful memory is synonymous with strengthening both hemispheres of the brain. Hence, it is ideal to develop not only your logic, but you should also work on improving your creative side. By doing so, you can become a well-rounded person with superb cognitive function.
4. Drug Abuse
Certain drugs are called illegal or illicit for one obvious reason – because they do not serve any function to improving or supporting your excellent health. Unfortunately, there are individuals who get hooked on these drugs after a few tries or experimentation. Once their body has become accustomed to these substances, losing the habit can be a major challenge. Aside from serious physical and psychological issues, drug abuse and addiction can lead to memory decline as these substances affect the hippocampus or the part of the brain in charge with cognitive functions. As a result, poor memory occurs and worsens unless addressed properly (along with overcoming addiction).
5. Excessive Alcohol Intake
Based on scientific research, too much consumption of alcohol can lead to numerous health issues and mental problems including damages to your retrospective memory. This is responsible for learning and recovery of memories, which prevents you from becoming forgetful. However, alcohol consumption and addiction can lead to periods of blackouts or temporary loss of memory. When the habit of drinking continues, parts of the brain receive less supply of oxygen, specifically areas that contain alcohol. Over time, this condition can cause negative effects on the entire central nervous system.
6. Thiamine Deficiency
Thiamine is an essential nutrient that is necessary for metabolizing food and converting it into energy. In addition, this B-vitamin is responsible for ensuring the normal functions of your nervous system. According to experts, large amounts of this vitamin is located in your brain, which maintains the production of neurotransmitters that impact your mood, memory, movement and thought. For those who receive insufficient amount of thiamine from their diet, they are likely to suffer from Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which is a type of neurological disorder that leads to short-term and long-term memory loss. To prevent this condition, it is important for people to receive the right amounts of thiamine, which is a maximum of 1.2 mg for adults.
7. Lack of Sleep
Sleep helps refresh your body and mind while enabling any necessary repairs of worn out cells and tissues. In addition, brain waves are created as you sleep, and these are responsible in storing memories to your brain. These brain waves also transfer memories to the prefrontal cortex, which is the section of your brain that stores long-term memories. When you lack enough sleep, memories are unable to move toward the prefrontal cortex, and this leads to forgetfulness and short-term memory loss. Thus, adults should aim to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep to improve their memory and prevent any deterioration of their frontal lobe that can result to cognitive decline.
Having a good memory can significantly impact your performance level. Thus, it’s only right to start enhancing your memory by avoiding these factors that can make you more forgetful and function less efficiently.

No extension of voters’ registration – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, has said it is ‘logistically impossible’ to extend the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration, which ended on Monday.

It however said it would give a fair chance to legitimate registrants and would on a date to be announced, set up registration points at its Local Government Area offices where people yet to do so can go to register.

This phase of the exercise, which commenced on August 20, 2014, involved the Federal Capital Territory and 11 states namely Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kwara, Anambra, Ebonyi, Ondo, Oyo Delta and Cross River.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, in Abuja on Monday, the commission stated that old tendencies towards irregularity, such as partisans urging people to come out and do multiple registrations, largely accounted for the crowd clusters lingering at registration points set up for the CVR.

It said, “Much as the Commission is eager to ensure that all legitimate persons who are yet to register as voters have the opportunity to do so, it is logistically impossible to extend this phase of the CVR beyond its scheduled deadline ( August 25, 2014).

“But in order to give fair chance to legitimate registrants, the Commission will, on a date to be shortly announced, set up registration points at its Local Government Area offices where people yet to do so can go to register.”

The electoral commission said that the registration process was further muddled up by many people who had relocated since the last registration exercise, but turned up for fresh registration.

“But, unfortunately, these sets of people obstructed legitimate registrants from having their turn at the registration points,” it said, adding that when data are consolidated and de-duplication is carried out, all instances of multiple registrations will be eliminated.

The Commission appealed that anyone who has previously registered and already has his records in the biometric Register of Voters should avoid re-presenting himself at any other place for registration.

According to INEC, if a previously registered person had relocated from where he registered, he should simply apply for transfer of the registration data to the new location, as provided for by the electoral law.

The statement further said, “If anyone found his name on the register displayed ahead of the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, but was unable to collect his PVC during the distribution period, such a person should go to respective LGA office of INEC where the card will be awaiting collection by now.

“INEC again hereby urges all stakeholders in the electoral process to commit themselves to playing at all times by the rules in the collective quest to enthrone free, fair and credible elections.”

1000 Clerics Storm Abuja To Reconcile Jonathan, Obasanjo

undefined
This report is according to Vanguard and I find it very amusing. Lol, 1000 clerics?

Ahead of the 2015 general elections in the country, over 1000 Bishops and Pastors from the Pentecostal fold on Sunday stormed the Ecumenical Center Abuja to reconcile President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasajo.

The Clerics who came from different parts of the country arrived late on Saturday while some of them from Imo State arrived early hours of Sunday and slept at the park as there were no officials of the organizers of the program.

But it was gathered that because of the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan who was away to Germany on a national official duty and that of the former President Obasanjo who was said to have been represented by his pastor the reconciliation prayer meeting could not precede.

There were divergent views on the invitation sent to the two leaders as some of the pastors claimed both President Jonathan and former President Obasanjo were formerly invited, some other members said that the President was not given formal invitation to attend but that he was aware of the meeting.

Some of the clerics told Vanguard that President Jonathan was represented at the prayer meeting by Venerable Obioma Onwuzurumba but that the members had wanted the two personalities to be present so that the reconciliation could be effective

In the absence of the main objective of the meeting which was the reconciliation, the Ministers of God had intensive prayers against the recent outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, the insurgency in the North East occasioned by the Boko Haram sect and the abduction of Chibok girls in Borno State.

A Pastor who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity said that there was also indiscriminate installation of Bishops and ordination of pastors at the occasion.

In an interview, one of the 100 pastors from Imo State that were stranded on arrival early hours of Sunday and founder and General Overseer of Light of God Mission, Mbaise, Imo State, Rev. Udechukwu Matthew Uka explained that the prayer meeting was to ensure a total reconciliation between President Jonathan and former President Obasanjo.

Rev. Uka said that the reconciliation of the two would bring a peaceful election in 2015 as well as unity to the country, stressing that the Men of God were concerned over the suspected strained relationship between two great leaders of the country.

According to him, “We came to Abuja to pray for the peace and unity of this nation and to make sure that the leaders of this nation are working in unison, especially we want to pray that God will unite the former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo with the present President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

“We know that they are leaders and when two of them are united, many souls, many part of the nation will be united, they are the head. The former President is aware of our coming, he is the grand patron of this network which is Master Seed Pentecostal and College of Bishops and Ministers network.

“We are almost 1000 in number organized by our national President Bishop David Emma Okoroafor Agu. The 1000 ministers are from different states of the federation. Many are from Rivers State, some from Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Abia State, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Lagos , Edo, Delta and many other parts of the country.

He also said that President Jonathan was aware of their and coming for the reconciliation meeting.

On while some of them slept at the park on arrival about 12 am on Sunday, he said, “The reason is that we came very late, our vehicle couldn’t meet up with time. Before we came in, our national organizers who should direct us where to pass the night have gone to their various homes, we came almost midnight that is why we were stranded.”

Also speaking Pastor Modestus Kelechi the General Overseer of Holy Ghost Intercessory Ministry with its headquarters in Mbutu, Aboh Mbaise in Imo State said that it was imperative that President Jonathan and former President Obasanjo should unite to give the nation direction.

Pastor Kelechi who is a notable prayer warrior said that God would not be happy to see the two men going across purposes, adding that animosity among the two could spell doom to the nation.

He said, “’They have to come together for the sake of this country.”’

Botswana to pay for all inmates' HIV drugs

undefined
TVC NEWS [BOTSWANA]- Botswana's High Court has ordered the government to provide treatment to HIV-positive foreign prisoners at the state's expense.
The high court Judge, Justice Bengbame Sechele ruled on Friday that the denial of anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment to foreign inmates violated their rights.
Dickson Tapela and Mbuso Piye, two Zimbabwean prisoners had sued the government for refusing to provide them with free ARVs, while providing them at no cost to Botswana citizens.
The prisoners said the government had denied them "the right to life" and that they deserved "freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment, discrimination, and inequality".
Sechele said the government's decision to exclude Tapela and Piye as well as other inmates from ARV was "irrational and invalid".
The judge also ruled that the government should pay for the legal fee for the two inmates.
The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) had supported the challenge against government policy, saying it violated the prisoners' constitutional right to equality, dignity and non-discrimination.
The High Court agreed, rejecting the government's claim that it did not have adequate funds to provide non-citizen detainees with the treatment.
BONELA director Cindy Kelemi welcomed the ruling, calling it a victory for human rights.
"The court affirmed that providing ARV treatment to all prisoners who need it is critical to effectively addressing HIV," she said.
