NAFDAC arrests don for hawking unauthorised herbal drugs

Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii
The National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control, has arrested a professor for selling unregistered herbal products.
The professor identified as Dayo Oyekole claimed he obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Ibadan.
The agency alleged that the professor paraded himself as an epidemiologist and chief consultant, Mosebolatan Holistic Lifecare International.
A pamphlet advertising some of the unregistered products of the company showed that it has offices at 11,Ire-Akari Estate Road, Isolo, Lagos with its Head office at Mosebolatan Plaza, Ogbere-Tioya, Off Olorunsogo Express Bridge, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Though the pamphlets and advertisement placed on a national newspaper (not Punch) showed that 14 of the company’s herbal products had been registered with NAFDAC, the agency said the company only has four of its products listed between 2005 and 2007.
The professor in the pamphlet claimed that NAFDAC had approved natural herbal medicines, for him to cure exam failures, marital problems, bad dreams among others.
But NAFDAC’s Director-General, Dr. Paul Orhii, at a briefing on Tuesday, denied the company’s claims, lamenting that unauthorised products have dominated the market.
Orhii stated, “Recently, the agency discovered an advertisement in the a national newspaper (not Punch) edition of June 15, 2014 where Prof. Dayo Oyekole of Mosebolatan Holistic Lifecare Centre placed an unauthorised advertisement of range of herbal products with spurious claims of total cure and deliverance of various ailments. Upon investigation, a few of the products (four out of 14) were listed by NAFDAC between 2005 and 2007. Since then, the listing of the products have not been renewed as required by law. Ten out of these products have no history of listing with NAFDAC but are openly displayed for sale and being dispensed in his clinic.”
“The agency in recent times has observed the proliferation of unauthorised advertisement of herbal products in both the print and electronic media.”
Most of these adverts are misleading and carry false claims of treatment and cure of various ailments including; treatment of HIV/AIDs, hepatitis, kidney diseases drug addiction, mental sickness, marital problems, bad dreams, examination failure, asthmas, cancer, prostate enlargement among others.
“While some of these adverts carry NAFDAC number on the products advertised, investigations have shown that most of these products have not been submitted to NAFDAC for listing.”
He explained that giving registration to herbal drugs does not guarantee efficacy of such products, but showed that it was safe for consumption.

Boko Haram plan to plant bombs inside fuel tankers – FG

Insurgents plan to hijack fuel tankers, plant bombs inside them and drive them to crowded places in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the Federal Government has said.

Chairman of the National Information Centre on the war against terrorism, Mr. Mike Omeri, said this this at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Omeri who briefed the press alongside Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade and Deputy Director, Public Relations, Department of State Security Services, Marylyn Ogar, also disclosed that none of the suspected insurgents intercepted in Abia State on Monday had up to N1000 on them.
He said, “The Nigerian security services have received intelligence report to the effect that insurgents intend seizing petrol tankers and plant Improvised Explosive Devices in the tankers and drive them to crowded places in Abuja.
“Against this backdrop, we hereby call on the Petrol Tankers Association to be on the red alert and advise their members to report any attempt or seizure of their vehicles to security agencies.
“In this wise, Nigerians are also advised to report any broken down tanker in any part of the territory to security agencies. Similarly, we are using this opportunity to appeal to the public to be on the alert particularly when they see any tanker driving dangerously.”
Omeri who heads the National Orientation Agency also disclosed that the alleged terror kingpin that had been identified among the travellers intercepted in Abia State had been on security wanted list since 2007.
He said, “It must be made clear and understood that the exercise was not targeted at any group of persons or individuals, but aimed at general security of the country.
“During the process of interrogation, the main kingpin who has been profiled by DSS in 2007 and has been on the watch list was identified which led to further questioning of the large movement of persons travelling in a convoy of over 30 buses with none of the travellers having up to N1000 on them.
“Clearly, their mission was suspicious and had to be thoroughly investigated. We therefore appeal for the understanding of the public in allowing our security agencies to carry out their legitimate duties.”
Omeri said the abductors of the two sisters that were released on Tuesday in Abuja were being subjected to further investigation.

Smoking is as expensive as it is deadly

Smoking is as expensive as it is deadly
Whenever Jamaicans want to warn someone about the dangers inherent in something, they express it with the utmost in Patois thus: Nuh guh dah. In English Language, it simply means, “Don’t go there!”
That statement seems strong enough when one considers the dangers inherent in smoking. This is because smoking and enjoying sound health don’t go together — you’d have to take one! But despite this fact, young adolescents — male and female alike — are taking to the dangerous habit with wild abandon.
“They see it as a rite of passage; while many see it as a way to be ‘cool.’ Yet, cigarette use is anything but cool, what with the toll it takes on health, with different consequences among the sexes,” says General Practitioner, Dr. Friday Odiase.
How does smoking affect the female body, you may ask? According to the online portal, girlshealth.gov, every part of a woman’s body pays the price for the unhealthy habit of smoking.
While smoking affects the health of any smoker, researchers warn that women stand greater risks in certain respects because of their biological make-up. The risks are numerous, experts say, and they include:
Stroke
A new research published in the American Heart Association journal, Stroke, reveals that women smokers may be at greater risk for a more deadly and uncommon type of stroke.
Researchers compared data from more than 80 international studies that were published between 1966 and 2013, and found that smoking is linked to more than a 50 per cent greater risk of ischemic stroke the most common stroke — one that’s caused by a blood clot — in both men and women. However, for the more deadly type of stroke — one that is caused by a brain bleed, known as a hemorrhagic stroke — smoking resulted in a 17 per cent greater risk in women than in men.
The authors, Drs. Sanne Peters and Mark Woodward, suggest that the greater risk for bleeding stroke among women might be due to hormones and how nicotine impacts blood fats. “It seems that fats, cholesterol and triglycerides increase to a greater extent in women who smoke, compared with men who smoke, increasing their risk for coronary heart disease to a greater extent than in male smokers,” they enthuse.
Brain
The brain of any animal is the seat of intelligence, and it is one organ of the body that determines whether or not you stay alive. For instance, once the doctor declares an individual as brain dead, keeping him on life support becomes meaningless and all medical support is withdrawn at that point.
Physicians say when you smoke, you toy with your brain’s health. This is because nicotine — the substance that makes tobacco addictive — goes to your brain very quickly. Though nicotine makes the smoker feel good when she is smoking, it can also make her anxious, nervous, moody, and depressed afterwards.
Worse still, experts say, using tobacco can cause headaches and dizziness. Having a headache or feeling dizzy can be unsettling on its own, when combined, experts say, they’re even more perplexing.
Headache expert and director of the Headache Centre at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Peter Goadsby, notes that when you are dizzy, you may be feeling lightheadedness as if you’re going to pass out; or you may feel a sense of movement, “like you might be spinning or the world might be spinning.”
The worst part is that these symptoms might be indicative of other underlying health conditions, which may be hidden because you are already engaged in unhealthy behaviour.
Mouth
The teeth are sometimes described as “pearly whites,” indicative of how a healthy set of teeth should look. But then, tobacco stains your teeth, giving them brownish colour that is definitely unattractive. To boot, it also gives you bad breath!
Worse still, a nutritionist, Dr. Remi Omotunde, says smoking ruins the taste buds, such that the smoker won’t be able to taste her favourite foods. This may lead to bulimia anorexia — an eating disorder that is entirely unrelated to smoking but which happens to be a secondary fallout of the habit.
A health gum hovers between healthy pink and attractive red. However, smoking changes all that, besides causing bleeding gums and cancers of the mouth and throat, endocrinologists warn.
Heart
Cardiologists say a normal heart pumps approximately 4.7-5.7 litres of blood per minute throughout the blood vessels to various parts of the body by repeated, rhythmic contractions. Smoking impairs this function and rather increases your heart rate and blood pressure and causes heart disease and heart attacks. Worse still, if you try to do activities like exercise or play sports, your heart has to work harder to keep up. By the way, do you know of any athlete who is a smoker? Not any in the global arena where a perfectly healthy body is the least expected of any athlete!
Lungs
Anatomically, physicians say, the lungs are one of the hardest-working organs in the body. They expand and contract up to 20 times a minute to supply oxygen to be distributed to the tissues all over the body and expel carbon dioxide that has been created throughout the body. That is talking about the normal, healthy lungs, which a smoker definitely lacks.
Physicians warn that smokers have trouble breathing because smoking damages the lungs, causing more frequent and more serious attacks among the asthmatics; while it also causes a lot of coughing with mucus.
“The brown tar that tobacco leaves in the lungs can cause emphysema (lung disease) and lung cancer,” physicians warn.
Smoking and fertility
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, cigarette smoking is harmful to a woman’s ovaries, and the degree of harm is dependent upon the amount and the period of time a woman smokes.
It says, “Smoking appears to accelerate the loss of eggs and reproductive function and may advance the time of menopause by several years. Components in cigarette smoke have been shown to interfere with the ability of cells in the ovary to make oestrogen and to cause a woman’s eggs to be more prone to genetic abnormalities.”
A Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology, Oladapo Ashiru, adds, “Smoking is strongly associated with an increased risk of spontaneous miscarriage and possibly ectopic pregnancy as well. Pregnant smokers are more likely to have low birth weight babies and premature birth. “The incidence of sudden infant death syndrome also increases in households where someone smokes.”

Lagos – A 56-year-old man, Adebayo Ajibode, on Wednesday urged an Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 30-year-old marriage to Bosede because of his wife’s alleged fetism.
Adebayo, a mechanic, who lives at Alakuko, a suburb of Lagos, prayed the court to dissolve his marriage to Bosede for her negligence of her matrimonial duties.
He told the court that his wife would go out in the morning and return at night, and has failed to perform her duties as expected of a housewife.
“I wanted to have my bath, but surprisingly I saw a charm under the bucket, when I called my wife she couldn’t say a word, then I knew I had to be watchful.
“Sixteen years ago, I wanted to make love to her, I saw an incision on her chest, I couldn’t go further because I knew it connoted bad omen.
“Since then, I haven’t made love to her, also I see cobwebs in front of my bedroom door, each morning I wake up,” he said.
Adebayo also told the court that his wife allegedly killed his neighbour’s son after a fight with the mother and also allegedly killed one of his children another woman had for him.
The petitioner and father of three, aged between 25 and 30, told the court that his wife had married out two of his daughters without his knowledge and that he hadn’t seen them for five years.
“Living with her is hell, I don’t want to lose my life, I want a divorce before she kills me,” he said.
However, the respondent, Abosede, 51, a house wife, told the court that she had nothing to say.
The court president, Chief Godwin Awosola, said the respondent fought with the bailiff who gave her the court summon and also torn the summon paper.
“That is contempt of court, in view of this, you will sweep the court and the environment for one hour,” he said.
He also ordered the respondent to vacate the room she is staying in her husband’s house with immediate effect.
Awosola adjourned the case to July 1 for judgment. (NAN)

(NAN)

By: Aarav Sen
A woman announced that she has married her dog because it is all she needs.

Amanda Rodgers said that after many years she has finally found wedded bliss with her dog.

The 47-year-old divorced woman of the United Kingdom, married her loyal pet terrier named Sheba. They became a couple in front of 200 people in Split, Croatia.

The woman told guests that Sheba had been in her life for years, making her laugh and comforted her when she felt low. “I could not think of anything more I would need from a life partner,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers married a human more than 20 years ago, but that relationship ended in just a few months. Rodgers of London, said that when she proposed to her dog she knew that it had accepted her proposal by the way it wagged its tail.

Fellow Nigerians,
1.I greet and felicitate with you all, today, as we mark 15 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in our beloved country.
2.Our dear nation, Nigeria, has certainly come a long way and made notable progress since our first Democracy Day on May 29, 1999 when the military finally relinquished power and handed over to a democratically-elected government, marking the true beginning of a government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan
3.Although I have ordered a low-key commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day in deference to the current mood of the nation, there can be no doubt that the past 15 years, the longest period of sustained democratic governance in our country, have been a blessing to us, as a people.
4.As we commemorate 15 years of our Fourth Republic today therefore, I believe that it is fitting that we pay tribute once again to all those who played a part in restoring our nation to the true path of democratic governance, built on the foundations of rule of law and freedom of expression.
5.As a result of our collective efforts since 1999, democratic governance is now entrenched in our nation and institutions. I wholeheartedly believe that our people are the better for it. The scope of fundamental rights and liberties enjoyed by our people over the past 15 years has been expanded beyond measure.
6.On my watch, we have witnessed high national economic growth rates, steady improvements and expansion of national infrastructure including airports and roads, the restoration of rail transportation, the efficient implementation of a roadmap for improved power supply, a revolutionary approach to agricultural production, as well as advances in education, sports, youth development, healthcare delivery, housing, water supply and other social services.
7.In the oil and gas sector, our promotion of a sustainable local content policy, continues to guarantee equity and better opportunities for Nigerian entrepreneurs and skilled personnel.
8.Significant increase in mobile telephone and national broadband penetration, making Information and Communications Technology (ICT) one of the fastest growing sectors of the Nigerian economy. We have also developed strong financial markets and regulatory institutions. Our banks now have regional and global footprints.
9.Nigeria has also gained recognition as the largest economy in Africa, the most preferred investment destination in the continent and in terms of returns on investment, the fourth in the world. We are pleased that the world has noticed, as global leaders converged in Abuja early this month for the World Economic Forum in Africa.
10.The event not only witnessed a record attendance, it brought the prospect of an additional flow of investment into the Nigerian economy estimated at over $68 billion over the next few years.
11. In foreign relations, our country has equally done well within this period, by establishing and strengthening strong partnerships with all ECOWAS countries and the rest of the world. This has helped to deepen Nigeria’s leadership role in multilateral institutions including the United Nations.
12.Furthermore, under this administration, we have made consistent progress in improving the standard of elections in our country to ensure that they are ever more credible and truly representative of the people’s free choice. The National Conference we initiated to deliberate and make recommendations on the best ways of resolving our current political and socio-economic challenges is on-going. It is our expectation that its outcomes will help to further consolidate the gains we have made from democracy in the past 15 years, and place our dear nation even more firmly on the path to greatness.
Dear Compatriots,
13.It is a sad fact that as I address you today, all the gains of the past 15 years of democratic governance in our country are threatened by the presence of international terrorism on our shores. Our dear country, Nigeria is facing a new challenge. A war has been unleashed on us. Extremist foreign elements, collaborating with some of our misguided citizens, are focused on an attempt to bring down our country and the democracy and freedom we cherish and celebrate today.
14. The despicable abduction of school girls from Chibok in Borno State has brought to the awareness of the entire world, the heartless brutality of these terrorists who want to instigate a descent into anarchy and balkanize our nation.
15.In recent years, terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of several of our compatriots, many have been injured or maimed, whole villages and communities have been destroyed and the economy of some of our states is in jeopardy.
16.There can be no doubt that what we are witnessing in Nigeria today is a manifestation of the same warped and ferocious world view that brought down the Twin Towers in New York, killed innocent persons in Boston and led to the murder of defenceless people in the Southern Russian city of Volgograd. Terrorist activities have brought war and pains to Mali, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. These agents of evil continue to brainwash and incite ignorant young men and women to attack the innocent. We cannot allow this to continue.
17.I welcome the statements of solidarity from patriotic citizens and the global community in support of our efforts to stamp out terrorism. I applaud the understanding that in a democracy, such as we are building, people can have differences while sharing worthy values and standing together in opposition to the scourge of terrorism. Nigeria is the only country we have and we must all work to preserve it for present and future generations.
18.Despite the challenges we face, we must commend our security forces. We must not forget their gallantry and successes in liberating nations and in peacekeeping, from Liberia to Sierra Leone, Congo, Sudan, Mali, Guinea-Bissau and many places in Africa and beyond. Our forces have paid the supreme price in several places at several times.
19.Today, they face a different challenge, an unconventional war by terrorists. They are adjusting and are being equipped to tackle the new menace of terrorism. We must show confidence in their ability. I have no doubt that, with the support of Nigerians, our neighbours and the international community, we will reinforce our defence, free our girls and rid Nigeria of terrorists.
20.It is now 45 days since the horrifying abduction of the college girls of Chibok. I share the deep pain and anxiety of their parents and guardians and I assure them once again that government will continue to do everything possible to bring our daughters home.
21.I am determined to protect our democracy, our national unity and our political stability, by waging a total war against terrorism. The unity and stability of our country, and the protection of lives and property are non-negotiable. I have instructed our security forces to launch a full-scale operation to put an end to the impunity of terrorists on our soil.
22.I have also authorized the security forces to use any means necessary under the law to ensure that this is done. I assure you that Nigeria will be safe again, and that these thugs will be driven away – it will not happen overnight, but we will spare no effort to achieve this goal.
23.For our citizens who have joined hands with Al Qaeda and international terrorists in the misguided belief that violence can possibly solve their problems, our doors remain open to them for dialogue and reconciliation, if they renounce terrorism and embrace peace.
24.My government, while pursuing security measures, will explore all options, including readiness to accept unconditional renunciation of violence by insurgents, and to ensure their de-radicalization, rehabilitation and re-integration into the broader society.
Dear Compatriots,
25.We must remain united to win the war against terrorism. Christians, Moslems, farmers, fishermen, herdsmen, teachers, lawyers, clergy or clerics, the rich, the poor and Nigerians from all sections of the country must work together with our security agencies and armed forces to overcome the terrorists who now threaten all that we hold dear.
26.The war against terror may be difficult, but the days of peace will come again. Terror is evil; nowhere in history has evil endured forever. The menace of Boko Haram will surely come to an end. I believe that because of your prayers, your courage, hardwork, faith and sacrifice, we will ultimately prevail over the terrorists and all other evil forces.
27.We are a strong, resilient and courageous people. We will continue to partner with the civilized world, to confront international terrorism and every other challenge that comes our way with patriotic zeal and determination.
Fellow Nigerians,
28.Yes, we have challenges but we will surely overcome. Nigeria is our country. Nigeria is blessed. We will all collectively protect, defend and develop this country for ourselves, and our children.
29. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
30. Thank you and God bless Nigeria.

World Cup 2014: Fan Dies After Staying Up Late Watching Games For Three Straight Nights

A football fan has died after staying up until the early hours for three straight nights watching World Cup matches.
Now fans across China have been warned to ration their soccer intake because of the exhausting 11-hour time difference between the country and Brazil.
Zhou Meng, 39, from Shanghai, died from a brain haemorrhage while watching Costa Rica’s exciting 3-1 win over Uruguay.
The high blood pressure sufferer was rushed to the Shanghai No. 10 People’s Hospital after suffering a stroke and pronounced dead several hours later.
Relatives said Zhou was a keen football fan and had already stayed up for the two previous nights watching televised matches from Brazil.
Zhou was sitting on his sofa in front of his TV at home in the early hours of Sunday when he suddenly collapsed.
A hospital spokesman said people with high blood pressure and heart conditions are more vulnerable to brain haemorrhages when events make them excited or emotional.
Shanghai’s hospitals reported a larger number of emergency cases than usual last weekend – the first weekend of the World Cup.
Accident and emergency units said the number of patients increased by 50% over the weekend.
Some 40% had respiratory or stomach problems, often caused by irregular eating and sleeping patterns.
Most group games start at midnight, 3am, 4am and 6am, in China leaving fans struggling to balance their football fix with their daily routine.
“I’ve been watching games every day for the past three days, mostly the 3am and 6am games,” said Liu Yitao, a 29-year-old white collar worker.
Liu admitted on Monday he was feeling tired at work and now plans only to watch group stage games at weekends.
On Saturday, a 50-year-old driver, who is said to have stayed up all night watching the football died with four passengers when their vehicle collided with a bus in a tunnel in Wenzhou, eastern China.
And in the cities of Suzhou and Dalian, different cases of a fan dying while watching games were reported.

7 Ways to Cook Up Chemistry Through Conversation

071811_FirstDate
As shallow as it may seem, physical attraction is undeniably the most primal on our sensory palate. If we’re being up front here, we readily admit to the fact that a potential partner’s looks rank high on the list of deal breakers for the average person. Some people are blessed with those superior genes and there’s not a whole lot anyone can do about that.
That’s the top ten percent of us. Everyone else has to work with what they’ve got. Count me among those folks. I learned fairly early on that I wasn’t a winner in the looks lottery — which was fine. Why? Because it forced to me to become a more well-rounded personality in order to compete with the pretty boys and the jocks. And to my surprise, I was able to hold my own.
While you can’t force attraction, there are definitely some things you can do to cultivate it. Personality and conversation are dramatically under-appreciated tools in the toolkit of finding a mate. Not sure how to fine-tune your skills? Here are 7 tips to help you increase your odds of cooking up that nebulous thing called chemistry.
Be confident: Speak with simple, healthy and sexy confidence — not arrogance or self-centeredness. Nothing goes any further than a “hello” if you come off as scared or timid. Men and women alike are turned off by it. Don’t even give yourself time to think about what could go wrong or how the other person may react to you. Just be you. For the right person that’s good enough.
Make eye contact: Don’t stare through the other person like you’re in a hypnotic trance, but make sure eye contact is consistent. Show that you’re engaged and interested.
Encourage a balanced conversation: Now that you’ve got down how to present yourself, you need to figure out how you’re going to heat things up during your conversation so you make an impression. Most people advise us to keep the focus on the other person; make the chat about them. Wrong! A conversation is a two-way street. Yes, you want to know all about this new person, but make sure you’re able to casually share the fascinating aspects about yourself in the conversation. In some cases, you may only have a few minutes with this person, so you don’t want them walking away not knowing how interesting you are!
Showing interest in someone is great for their ego, but it accomplishes nothing for you. Share who you are. Share the things that may complement him. He loves to travel? Talk about your favorite vacation spots. Or talk about how you’d love to travel more…but you’re having a tough time choosing where to go for your first big trip. Make this interaction about the two of you and steer the conversation towards something the two of you could do together.
Don’t be shy about doling out compliments: Please don’t be corny or phony, though. Real compliments have real effects. Trust me, people know when you’re being a salesperson. You’ve gone out of your way to have this conversation, a sure sign that there’s something worth complimenting about this person, so do it! It shows confidence and interest.
Be positive: There’s something absolutely magnetic about a person who brims with optimism and positivity. If that’s who you are, speak on it. Even better if you can be positive and confident all at once. For example, you can say, “Hey, life’s great, but it’s a roller coaster. I’ve always believed that there are few obstacles I couldn’t overcome.” A glass half full attitude will help keep someone interested; no one wants to be around a Debbie Downer.
Provide verbal reassurance: You know what makes you really interesting? Your attentiveness. Paying attention to even the most mundane details of a conversation shows that you have some capacity to engage, empathize and acknowledge. Example: (Engage) “I think it’s so great that you remember your niece’s birthday. (Empathize) So funny! I try to remember all my niece’s and nephew’s birthdays! (Acknowledge) Family seems to be really important to you. That’s really, really sweet. I admire that.”
Laugh a little: Find that moment where the two of you can share a light laugh. Doesn’t have to be some big guffaw, just a fleeting moment where you flash your ability to find humor in even the most awkward of situations.
Remember, it’s about leaving an impression, making him remember you…no matter who you are or where you’re from.  No games. No fakeness. The conversation is the ultimate opportunity to show your personality, sensuality, intelligence, and independence. Take advantage of it!
