Wole Soyinka revealed of being diagnosed with prostrate cancer

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has revealed he was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer in 2014.

Speaking to BBC, Soyinka revealed how his doctor helped him get rid of it with a great assistance from his wife.

He said “It hadn’t yet gotten to the stage where it was non-reversible and so (the doctor) gave us a number of guidelines. I say us because he wanted to make sure that my wife made sure that I followed it. He sensed that I wasn’t going to be a very good patient. So he spoke to her most of the time rather than me,” he said.

”There is no disease in the world any human being needs to be ashamed. I don’t see why people need to go to Canada, Europe to receive treatment which is affordable in this nation, it is a shame. The options I compared to other treatment I know about and I have seen in operation. Mine for me was an easy ride, uncomfortable in many ways but it is painless.”

Genital Ulcers

What are genital ulcers?

They are sores usually found on the vagina or penis. They can also be found in the anus or on the skin around it. They sometimes hurt or leak fluid.

What causes them?

They are usually caused by sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. These include herpes, syphilis, and chancroid. Genital ulcers may also be caused by inflammatory diseases, trauma, or a bad reaction to skin care products.

Who can get genital ulcers?

Risk factors for genital ulcers are the same as those for STIs. They include unprotected sex, lack of male circumcision, and more than one sex partner. Genital ulcers caused by inflammatory diseases may run in families.

How can I lower my risk?

If you have sex, use a condom or dental dam. Although this decreases the risk, it is possible to get STIs from infected skin not covered by the condom or dental dam.

How do I know if I have genital ulcers?

Genital ulcers may show up in different ways. They sometimes start out as bumps or a rash and may or may not hurt. You may also have swollen glands in the groin area or a fever. Your doctor can test the area to see if you have an STI.

How are they treated?

Treatment depends on the cause of the ulcers. STIs are usually treated with antibiotic or antiviral pills or shots. If you have an inflammatory disease, you may need a shot or ointment to put on the ulcers. Some genital ulcers go away on their own, but may still lead to more serious infection. Your doctor may only treat your pain or take care of the wound, but testing for STI is usually needed.

Where can I get more information?

Your doctor

Stop biting of finger nails

Onychophagia, or nail biting, is a pretty common habit, affecting an estimated 30 percent of adults, 45 percent of teens, and 30 percent of children.
Nail biting can be caused by stress, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, or just being bored and fidgety and all these can seem harmless, but you should know that it can invite bacteria or fungi infections to enter into the body and blood stream, increasing your chances of contracting a cold or the flu.
1. How nail biting leads to cold and flu
According to the CDC, there are more than 200 cold viruses floating around at any given time. Even though the risk factors for acquiring one include a weakened immune system and/or exposure to someone sick, you can significantly reduce your chances of catching a virus by keeping your hands away from your mouth.
Viruses that cause the flu also flourish on your skin, so wash your hands frequently with soap and water (or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer), and discourage nail biting by chewing gum.
2. How nail biting can harm your teeth
Nail biting can also damage your teeth and gums. The Academy of General Dentistry has found that nail biting can crack, chip, or wear down the front teeth, and also potentially lead to sore gums and gum tissue damage.
You may want to ask your dentist about having a mouth guard which can help you to stop biting your nails—or at least minimize some of the damage it can cause. They may also help to suggest some other techniques to help you quit the habit for good.

Breast cancer prevention

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 271,270 new cases of breast cancer in 2019, 99% of which will be diagnosed in women.
This are the ways to prevent this dangerous disease that attack our ladies.
While risk factors like genetics and age cannot be avoided, you can take measures to lower your risk of breast cancer mainly by staying healthy.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has several recommendations on how to do this.
The CDC recommends maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and discussing the risks of using oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy with your doctor.
Breastfeeding your children if and when you have them, helps too.
They advise drinking little to no alcohol, citing sources that indicate that the risk of breast cancer increases with alcohol consumption.
Factors such as older age, dense breasts, genetic mutations, previous treatment using radiation therapy, and a family history of breast cancer may increase your risk of getting breast cancer, according to the CDC.
Get regular screenings
Some women are diagnosed with breast cancer after noticing symptoms, but many  have no symptoms at all.
That’s why it’s vital to get regular mammograms in diagnostic centres.
The recommended age to start getting mammograms ranges from 40 to 50 depending on who you ask.
While the suggested age varies, the National Cancer Institute has found that women aged 50 to 69 years who get screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from breast cancer.

Know the symptoms
Many women are taught to look for new lumps or masses in their breast tissue but it’s important to be aware of other abnormalities.
Skin swelling or redness, change in breast shape, nipple discharge (other than breast milk), pain in or on the breast, and skin flaking or dimpling can be other possible warning signs of breast cancer, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
These signs are not a surefire indication of breast cancer, though, so be sure to see a doctor discuss any new changes.

Tips to get that your dream figure

General Tips

1. Eliminate Soda and Alcohol – Regular soda is loaded with calories and offers no nutritional value.  so it’s best to steer clear of it, as well. Alcohol has not only been associated with excess belly fat, but it can also lead to unhealthy food choices. If you want to tighten your waist, you must avoid these things.
2.
Drink Plenty of Water – Staying hydrated should be the main priority for anyone, but especially for those that are participating in a fitness routine. Drink a full glass of cool water when you first wake up to get your metabolism cranking. It’s also recommended that you drink another full glass before every meal to keep yourself from overindulging.
As you lose weight, your body will also require more water to flush out extra toxins. Staying hydrated will keep you from retaining water as well, which will reduce any “fluffiness” in your abdomen. A general rule of thumb is to drink at least 64 ounces of water daily, but feel free to drink even more!
3. Eat Clean and Avoid Processed Foods – What do we mean by “clean” food? Clean foods generally refer to whole foods that are as close as possible to their natural state. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean meats are the most commonly consumed clean foods.
These healthy choices are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your body needs to lose weight and firm-up. Processed foods should be avoided, as they are typically much more calorie-dense and offer little-to-no nutritional value.

13 methods that can reduce erectile dysfunction

1. Focus on foreplay

Simple lifestyle changes can help to improve erectile dysfunction and reduce anxiety. Some men do think that penetration is the only important thing this is really wrong in that it is not the only thing that counts in Sex. Erectile dysfunction is an incentive to try new methods that work better for your partner.
Foreplay includes touching, kissing, and oral sex. Making foreplay last can improve the sexual experience for everyone involved.
Foreplay may be especially important for women. A 2017 study found that very few women — around 18 percent — experience an orgasm from intercourse alone. According to the same findings, 36.6 percent of women said that clitoral stimulation was necessary for orgasm during intercourse.

2. Try the start-stop technique

Men who want to last longer during intercourse can try the start-stop technique. This technique involves quitting an ejaculation each time it is about to come. Do breath deeply and start again slowly when you stop it delays ejaculation as long as possible.
This method can train the body to hold off ejaculation and help a man to feel more comfortable with not ejaculating, even during intense sexual activity.

3. Try something new

Sexual pleasure thrives in an environment of passion and excitement.
If a person has been with one partner for a long time, sex can begin to feel routine, and it may seem increasingly difficult to feel excited, remain focused, or please the partner.
It may help to try a new sexual activity or position or to have sex in a different location. Also, talking about sexual fantasies can make sex more exciting.
In addition, it can help to do something new with a partner outside the bedroom, such as:
  • cooking together
  • kayaking or hiking
  • going to a museum
  • seeing a new band
  • trying a new sport
  • going for a picnic
  • traveling to places

Heartburn: Symptoms, Causes and Remedies

Most times when we experience heartburn, we blame it on the spicy meal we ate. However, asides food, being overweight, smoking, & even your sleeping position can cause heartburn.
1. What is heartburn?
Heartburn is that awful burning sensation in your chest or throat, usually when acid rises up from your stomach. It is a symptom. It is not necessarily a disease but an indicator of irritation or disease depending on the severity.

The condition can be a symptom of conditions like – GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) caused by long term acid refluxing back into the esophagus. If it occurs as often as 3 times a week, it could point to conditions like scleroderma and sarcoidosis, heart attack.
Symptoms of heartburn include:
•Burning pain in the chest that usually occurs after eating and may occur at night when asleep
•Pain that worsens when lying down, bending over or after a heavy meal.
•Bitter or acidic taste in the mouth.
2. Foods that cause or triggers heartburn
  • alcohol, particularly red wine.
  • black pepper, garlic, raw onions, and other spicy foods.
  • tomatoes
  • citrus fruits and products, such as lemons, oranges, and orange juice.
  • coffee and caffeinated drinks, including tea and soda.
  • peppermint.
  • chocolate
  • Salty foods
  • Beans (very common)
  • Milk
  • Fatty meats (oil meat)
2. Is heartburn the same as acid reflux?
No. Acid reflux is a common medical condition that can range in severity from mild to serious. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic, more severe form of acid reflux. Heartburn may be a symptom but they’re not the same.

It is not a condition on its own, and it has nothing to do with the heart. Instead, it is a symptom of acid reflux. If symptoms of acid reflux occur frequently, it can indicate that a person has gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Distinguishing between heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD may be hard, because they may all feel the same at the moment. However, understanding the differences can help a person find the right treatment.
3. Is heartburn related to a heart attack?
