Differences must not tear us apart – President Uhuru
President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged Kenyans to put their differences aside, in order to build the country.
Speaking while leading the nation in commemorating the 36th anniversary of the death of founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, he said Kenyans must uphold the ideals of the founding fathers which include unity, patriotism and selflessness.
“For us to succeed we must pull together and we must unite. Yes, we are a democratic society entitled to our different opinions but we should not allow those differences to tear the nation apart,” President Kenyatta said.
He lauded Mzee Kenyatta and others for the foundation they laid for the country, which has seen Kenya remain stable and peaceful.
“We are celebrating sacrifices which he and others made for us to be a nation. Were it not for their sacrifices, Kenya would not be what it is
today,” he said.
He went on to say: “You look at this continent and you see many nations in turmoil, but we have been an island of peace and a beacon of hope to many,” he posed.
The event was graced by many leaders including the Deputy President, Chief of Defence Forces, Speaker of the National Assembly, the Kenyatta family led by Mama Ngina Kenyatta, MPs, and Senators among others.
While addressing the congregation, Deputy President William Ruto lauded the efforts of the founding fathers in laying a strong base for the
country, which has held it together for the last 50 years.
He stated that the challenge was now on the new generation of leaders to resolve issues of corruption, nepotism, division and tribalism which are inhibiting growth, development and prosperity.
“Today is important to us as we are a mirror of what we want to be. We will lay a foundation under your leadership which will usher in a new
Kenya free of ethnicity, hatred and division,” said the Deputy President urging the President to tackle the problems facing Kenya head-on.
The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa Rt. Reverend David Riitho Gathanju urged Kenyans to work hard and achieve the desired goals of our founding fathers which will ensure a prosperous nation for all.
“The onus is on all of us to make Kenya a better place for our children and all generations to come,” added Rev Gathanju.
Earlier in the day, President Kenyatta led family members and other dignitaries in laying wreaths at Mzee Kenyatta’s Mausoleum at Parliament buildings before attending the memorial service held at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) unlike the customary Holy Family Basilica Catholic Church.
It is the first time President Kenyatta has joined the family in commemorating his father’s death since he was elected President.
Last year, Deputy President William Ruto led the family in commemorating the even as President Kenyatta was on an official tour of China.

Nigeria: Ogun Shuts Onabanjo Varsity to Maintain Peace
TVC NEWS [ABEOKUTA]- Nigeria's Ogun State Government has directed the Governing Council of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, to close down the university immediately to forestall breakdown of law and order.
The government also advised all parents whose wards are students of the university to immediately call them to order as the government will not tolerate any act that will disturb the peace being enjoyed by the people of the state.
In a statement signed by Taiwo Adeoluwa, Secretary to State Government, the decision to shut the university was taken in the overall interest of peace and order as the students of the university have continued to issue threats while rejecting all entreaties and concessions
made by the government on their various demands concerning the recently announced reduction of school fees.
The government had on August 12 after extensive deliberations involving the leadership of the student unions in the 10 state-owned tertiary
institutions, heads of the institutions and government representatives, announced reductions in school fees by as high as 61 percent.
The government also abolished the indigene/non-indigene dichotomy in the school fees regime and announced the 2014-2015 academic session as commencement period for the policy.
However, while students in nine of the ten institutions commended the government for its decisions, OOU students insisted that the new school fees regime should take effect from the 2013/2014 academic session and that the fees should be further reduced.
The OOU students premised their position on the fact that they are currently running the 2013-2014 academic session which will end in
January. They also rejected the fact presented by students of other institutions that they are also in the same situation as some of them
will only be concluding the 2013-2014 session in December.
The government had also sought to convince the students that it could not afford to bear the financial implication of commencing the
implementation of the new school fees regime as it will cost the government over N2 billion.
OOU students staged a violent demonstration in the state capital on August 15 and it took the personal intervention of the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun to restore normalcy.
The governor thereafter set up an ad-hoc committee to discuss with the students with a view to resolving the situation. During discussions with the ad-hoc committee, OOU students maintained their stand that the fees must be further reduced and that the implementation must commence immediately.
The explanation that no other State in Nigeria is saddled with the responsibility of funding 10 tertiary institutions and that to accede to
their request would mean natural death for the institutions made no sense to them.
The student leaders were within the week sending text messages round, urging their colleagues ‘to get ready for action’ as they are ready to
unleash violence on the state capital.
Security reports have since confirmed that because the students are acting under external influence, no concession made by the government will be satisfactory to them.

Nigerian students in Russia beg for food -House of Reps
TVC NEWS [ABUJA]- The House of Representatives Diaspora Affairs committee has said that about 322 Nigerian students under the Bilateral Education Agreement Scholarship Awards by the Federal Scholarship Board in Russia have not received stipends from the federal government for nine months.
A report by an Abuja based national daily reveals that the situation has forced the students to beg for food from their fellow students from neighbouring countries despite being on the government’s scholarship scheme.
The Paper quoting Chairman of the committee, Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa (APC, Lagos) as saying in a statement, explained that similar fate befell some Nigerian students in Russia not long ago, which was solved after the intervention of the committee.
Rep Dabiri-Erewa said her committee had “received with a deep sense of pain, incessant sad tales and complaints of about 322 Nigerian students on Scholarship from the Federal Government of Nigeria now begging for food in Russia.”
She said the students were in the country under the Bilateral Education Agreement Scholarship Awards by the Federal Scholarship Board. “For over eight months (and counting) our students are yet to receive their monthly stipends.
This act of unpaid student stipends is highly reprehensible and is beyond human justification. “The haphazard manner of payment of BEA
scholarship awardees needs to be addressed immediately with a view to implementing a permanent and long term solution,” the committee
chairperson appealed. While urging the education minister to ensure prompt resolution and payment of the students’ entitlements, she added that the country’s image was at stake if similar scenarios would continue to occur with Nigerian students abroad. “The lack of prompt
payment and subsequent student cash strap,” the lawmaker said, “has led to some of our students begging from their fellow African counterparts (on the same BEA scholarship from their countries) including those from Ghana, Namibia, Uganda and even Sierra Leone.

Nigerian doctors suspend 55 days old strike
TVC NEWS [ABUJA]- The striking Nigerian Medical doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association, on Sunday suspended their 55 day-old industrial action with immediate effect.
President of the association, Dr. Kayode Obembe, who addressed journalists in Abuja, subsequently, directed members to resume at their various duty posts on Monday.
The doctors began their industrial action on July 1, 2014 over a 24-point demands bothering on welfare, condition of service and poor facilities in government hospitals.
But obembe said the decision to suspend the industrial action was taken after the Emergency Delegate Meeting of the association, held in Abuja on Saturday.
He explained that the strike was suspended in the interest of urgent national emergencies while negotiations with the Federal Government continues.
The delegates at the meeting according to the NMA boss, however demanded the immediate reversal of the suspension of Residency Training Programme by the federal government.

He said the group equally directed its members in the State Ebola Monitoring Committees to continue to liaise with their state governments to immediately set up emergency response teams for the prevention, and treatment of any outbreak of EVD in their various states.
