How to become a great comedian

Starting out in stand-up com edy can be overwhelming and a little scary. Before you freak out, check out this helpful list of tips on improving your act and getting over failure for new and struggling stand-up comedians.

1.  Get On Stage Now

No amount of helpful tips or discussion can take the place of experience, and that's pretty much all that counts when it comes to stand-up. It's a true "learn-by-doing" art form, and you won't know what works (and what doesn't) until you've gotten on stage in front of an audience. The more chances you have to perform, the more you'll be able to learn. Many comedians perform multiple times a night in the early years, hopping from club to club or open mic to open mic. There is no substitute for stage time in comedy, so make sure you're getting lots of it.

2.  Don't Be Afraid to Bomb

You're not going to bring the house down every time you step on stage, particularly in the beginning. That means, from time to time, you're going to find out what it's like to bomb. That's ok; bombing can be very useful. You'll learn which parts of your actions aren't working and possibly why. You'll quickly find out how you react in these situations: are you fast on your feet? Can you recover the set? If nothing else, the experience of the bombing will be unpleasant enough that you'll work that much harder on your act to avoid it ever happening again. Fear can be a powerful motivator.

3.  Keep Up With Your Old Stuff

Even if you're working up new material, don't forget to keep your old stuff fresh. Maybe you've got a great setup, but there's a punchline or tag that will make a joke work even better. There's always room for improvement; go back every once in a while and punch up older jokes with new tags or punchlines. This can also be a great way to break out of a rut -- it gets your creativity going without requiring you to generate new material out of thin air.

4.  Don't Steal

Don't steal. Just don't. Don't even "borrow" or "rephrase." It's never cool, and it will end your career as a stand-up very quickly. If you ever think you might be lifting a joke from another comic -- even if it's unintentionally or subconsciously or whatever -- just drop the joke. It's not worth being labeled as a thief and a hack, which is ultimately what could happen.

5.  Stick to Your Time

Always be sure to stay within the time slot given to you by a promoter, club manager or open mic organizer. It's rude and unprofessional to go longer than your allotted time; remember, there are other comedians that are following you, and they should get every minute they've been promised. Conversely, it's also unprofessional to do less time on stage than what you're expected to deliver. That puts an unfair pressure on the comic after you to fill in the gap and perform longer than he or she had anticipated. Even if you're bombing, you're expected to fill a certain slot and should fill it. You want to establish a reputation for yourself as being a professional, and sticking to your time slot is a good way to do that.

6.  Tape Yourself

If you're able to (depending on where you're performing), take a video of your performance. Think of it like a football team's "game film"; you'll be able to go back and watch yourself to see what worked and what needs changing. Were you talking too fast? Did you step on laughs from the crowd? These are things you probably won't be aware of in the moment, when nerves and adrenalin may get the better of you. A videotape will give you the opportunity to examine and reflect on your performance so you can make changes for the future. Just remember not to obsess over it too much; if you over-evaluate, you may lose so of the freshness and spontaneity in your act.

7.  Hit the Clubs

Top Trainer Is "Shocked" by How Hard This Exercise Works Your Abs

If a deep abdominal burn—from your workout, not a hot wings binge—is a distant memory, it’s time to exterminate your regular core routine. That lack of soreness means that your abs likely adapted to the exercises you always throw at them. In turn, you need to shake things up to continue to make gains.
The band resisted dead bug is a great reminder of what the aftermath of a brutal abs workout is supposed to feel like.
“I was messing around with bands and I stumbled upon this variation of the dead bug exercise,” says Dean Somerset, C.S.C.S., an exercise physiologist from Alberta, Canada. “I did a few sets of it and it sort of shocked me how hard it worked my abs.”

As the band resisted dead bug’s name implies, it’s a variation of the dead bug—a bodyweight core exercise which Men’s Health Fitness Advisor Bill Hartman says is one of the best for strengthening your abs. Better abs function, Hartman says, may reduce back pain and translate to improvements in all sports and lifts in the gym.
“The dead bug works so well because it trains your abs to really lock down and stabilize your spine so your back doesn’t flex,” says Somerset. “But adding the band overloads the exercise, making your abs work harder than they ever could with bodyweight alone.”

Somerset, who is an injury rehabilitation and prevention expert, also likes the move because it hits your abs hard without compromising your back, a commonly injured area. “A lot of the most popular core exercises put load on the spine and discs in your back,” he says.

Add it to your routine, and prepare to feel the burn.
Instructions
Loop the midpoint of a resistance band (one with a handle at each end) around a pole or squat rack, about 2-3 feet off the ground.
Lie on your back 2 or 3 feet from and facing away from the anchor point of the band, a handle of the band in each hand.
Raise your legs so that your hips and knees are both bent 90 degrees. Your back should be naturally curved, your hips and upper back touching the floor with a slight arch in your low back.
Keep your shoulders pressed into the ground and raise your arms so that they’re perfectly vertical and in line with your shoulders. The band should be taut, “pulling” your arms back toward the anchor point. This is the start.
Take in a big breath of air and then slowly straighten and lower your right leg down until it’s just above the ground. As you do, slowly blow out all the air in your lungs (that’s when you’ll really feel the burn!). Bring your right leg back to the start, and repeat on your left leg. Do 6-8 reps on each leg (the band should be stretched enough that you can only do that many reps). Do up to 5 sets.

Prof Osinbajo calls out GEJ over his comment about corruption

When asked to clarify his statement "Stealing is not corruption" during the presidential media chat yesterday evening, president Jonathan said he made the statement quoting the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Dahiru Mustafa, who explained to him that his analysis of corruption cases in Nigeria showed that most of the cases tagged as corruption were theft. President Jonathan said that referring to stealing as corruption minimizes the crime. "Ole (thief in Yoruba) should be called Ole and given that treatment. Let us communicate properly. The word corruption, we have abused it." GEJ said. .

Not satisfied with President Jonathan's response, Prof Osinbajo took to his Facebook wall to react.

I Have Never Been A Religious Fanatic & Will Never Be One – Buhari

The presidential candidate of The All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has said he is not a religious fanatic, and will never be one. He said this in a statement made available today to journalists that Nigerians should ignore the opposition who have ran out of looking for excuses to discredit him. He said if he was a fanatic he would have Islamised Nigeria between December 1983 and August 1985 when he ruled the country.

“I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what our detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been. In all my life, I have never supported extremism of any kind. Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I feel extremely sad that I have to give this type of assurance.

“My background is in the army, and there is no doubt that the military is the most integrated pan-Nigerian institution. And even today, the military is one of the institutions that represents the pride of our nation’s possibilities in unity.

“Compatriots from every corner of this country come together, work and live together, entrust their lives to each other and integrate their families. It is a military where many of my dearest friends, from all faiths and parts of the country, lost their lives defending the unity of our nation. That was the military I served in, and in that military it was impossible to be a bigot,” he said,

He also noted that his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was not only a lawyer but a senior pastor.
