Activist Miracle Boyd Female protester losses teeth in chicago

An 18-year-old protester was brutally punched in the face by police, knocking out her front teeth, at a Chicago protest calling for the toppling of a Christopher Columbus statue over the weekend.

On Friday at least 1,000 people gathered around a statue in Grant Park where hordes of police clashed with demonstrators deploying pepper spray and beating people with wooden batons in what witnesses described as a 'bloodiest' protest so far.

Activist Miracle Boyd, 18, had just finished addressing the crowd protesting at the statue when she says she got into an argument with an officer.

When she started to record their altercation the cop allegedly took a swing with his left arm and hit her in the face.

'My tooth was knocked out. I have lip abrasions in my mouth. My teeth hurt really bad,' she said to ABC7.

She added the officer smacked her phone out of her hand and she was hit in the face.

Several videos of that altercation emerged on social media showing Boyd back away from officers before she appeared to get hit in the face and rushed off covering her bloodied mouth.
Boyd, a member of the youth group GoodKids MadCity, said the officers took her phone.

She had graduated from high school last month, was headed to Depaul University in the fall according to a June post by Chicago Public Schools, and was offered an internship with state senator Robert Peters’ office just last week.

A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for her medical bills.

State Sen. Peters slammed the police aggression towards her tweeting: 'I’m sad, angry and disgusted.'

'She’s someone who fights every day for gun violence prevention, who fights for a safe community. And what did she face? Abuse,' he said.

Fighting coronavirus is in our hands says FG to Nigerians

The battle to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic and stay alive is now an individual responsibility, which Nigerians must take seriously, the Federal Government said on Monday.

Nigerians, the government noted, have a choice to take responsibility by obeying the measures and guidelines developed to fight the pandemic or end up in any of the treatment centres for Covid -19 patients.

The Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said this on Monday.

Mustapha said that Nigerians are the ones that can work assiduously to ensure that the level of transmission of the virus is reduced.

He lamented that many Nigerians have refused to take personal responsibility following the easing of the lockdown by the federal government.

He said: “If you listen to me conscientiously in the past four weeks I have spoken about personal responsibility, that it is our responsibility. We are not your front liners anymore. The choice of whether you will get to the hospital is yours.

“You, my fellow people, you are your last liners now. What you do, what you say, your actions, will determine where you will end.

“We have gotten to a stage where no amount of enforcement will cut this tool for us. It is the choices that we make that will determine what will happen. The governments of subnational will try to do their best but it is the choices of the people that will determine how effective that will be.

“We are the only ones that can work assiduously to ensure that we reduce the level of transmission now that it has been ceded in our own communities.”

He reiterated that the virus was still deadly despite easing of the lockdown.

According to him, nobody should be deceived that Nigeria has reached the peak of the pandemic.

He said that Nigeria’s reported cases will continue to rise, adding that the rate will depend on what Nigerians do.

Osaka, Mayor Ichiro Matsui has been appealing to people to take steps to reduce the risk of virus infection

The mayor of Osaka has come under fire after saying women take longer than men while shopping as he tried to promote social distancing to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

By Friday morning there were nearly 1,500 coronavirus cases in Osaka and the prefecture that surrounds it, making it the second hardest-hit after Tokyo.

Japan's government has declared a nationwide state of emergency till at least May 6 in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

In Osaka, Mayor Ichiro Matsui has been appealing to people to take steps to reduce the risk of virus infections, but his remarks over gender shopping behaviour stirred controversy.

'When a woman goes... it will take time,' Matsui said when asked by a male reporter about possibly reducing shoppers' entry to supermarkets to lower the risk of coronavirus infections.

'If it was you, if you were told to get this or that, then you would go directly... and go home,' he said. 'It's also fine for men to go shopping while avoiding contact.'

Matsui, who also said married couples should avoid going shopping together, drew criticism on Japanese Twitter over his remarks, with users saying they were sexist.

'Japan is a country where these words come calmly out of a mayor's mouth. Deplorable,' said one user today.

Another user said the remark showed politicians don't think enough about what parenting, household work and nursing involve.

'When I hear remarks like this... I feel the need for people with diverse backgrounds to participate in politics,' the user said.

Matsui actually got things the wrong way around, another user said, saying women needed less time than men when going out shopping.

'Women are deciding more quickly when shopping,' the user said, adding he took longer to find the right aisles for items he needed.

Matsui on Thursday also said people should limit how often the go to the supermarket to shop, suggesting people born in months with an even number should only go on even dates, and those with uneven numbered months should go on uneven dates.

Beyoncé donates $6 million to aid in the relief of covid 19

Beyoncé has joined in the mission to raise awareness and funds for COVID-19 relief. The Grammy Award winner, through BeyGOOD, her charitable initiative, has partnered with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s #Startsmall, donating $6 million to aid organizations that provide mental wellness services.

The recipients include health facilities supported by UCLA, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (particularly in New York, Houston, New Orleans, and Detroit), the United Memorial Medical Center, Bread of Life, Mathew 25, and more.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, many groups have been created to help small businesses, scientific research, and child welfare—both locally and nationally. Bey, however, is focusing on communities in metropolises that have been especially hit hard.

“In our major cities, African-Americans comprise a disproportionate number of workers in these indispensable occupations, and they will need mental health support and personal wellness care, including testing and medical services, food supplies and food deliveries, both during and after the crisis,” read a statement released by Beyoncé’s representatives.

Her act of generosity follows other celebrities who have pledged substantial monetary aid. They include her husband, Jay-Z, as well as Rihanna, Demi Lovato, and Dorsey, who sparked these charitable efforts with his $1 billion donation. Like Beyoncé, all are committed to helping those in need during this trying time.
