First Generation schools’ Principals visit QC for assessment
Kofoworola Belo-Osagie
Seven principals of first generation secondary schools in Lagos state have visited Queen’s College to verify the claims of epidemic in the 92-year old girls’ only secondary school.
The principals, under the umbrella of the Lagos First Generation Heritage Colleges Association (LAFGHECA), were led by the founding chairman of the association, Otunba Dele Olapeju, also the former principal of King’s College Lagos.
The delegates of the association, which comprises of the oldest public and missionary secondary schools in Lagos State, came to the school from the group’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at King’s College.
The delegation included the principal, CMS Grammar School, Revd Sunday Sofekun; Principal, St Finbarrs High School, Mr Victor Biyibi, who was elected LAFGHECA Chairman on Thursday; Principal, Ansar U-Deen Girls’ High School, Itire, Mrs Sherifat Mohammed; Principal, Ansar U-Deen College, Isolo, Mr Tajudeen Adebambo; Principal, Western College, Yaba, Olusegun Olamoyesun, and Principal, Ansar-U-Deen Grammar School, Randle, Surulere, Mr Habeeb Badru.
After a session with the Principal of Queen’s College, Mrs Tokunbo Yakubu-Oyinloye, the visitors asked to see the sick bay to confirm if indeed many girls were ill.
Mrs Yakubu-Oyinloye said there was no epidemic, adding that the girls who had flu had been allowed to go home to treat themselves.
She said: “We don’t have any epidemic in the college. What we had were some students with flu, which we have been told is prevalent around this period and seems to be all over Lagos. But I do not know why someone decided to plant fake news in the press.
“But I thank God, the Ministry of Health have been here – LUTH, LASUTH, Epidemiologists and others. You must have seen their press release inside the papers– where they said it has nothing to do with water, or food. That is upper respiratory tract. It does not have anything to do with what happened in 2017.
“Some children were sent home because some of them do not use drugs. So that they can get individualized care and minimize the sneezing, the touching of each other – we sent them home.”
Principal of Western College, Olamoyesun, said he was glad there was no epidemic as the incident of 2017 water-borne disease which left three pupils of Queen’s College dead, affected his school.
“Our school is close to Queen’s College so when I heard of the rumour, I had to drive down. But I thanked God when I saw children trooping in and out,” he said.
Otunba Olapeju said after going round, he had debunked the epidemic claim, attributing it to mischievous elements. He said the LAFGHECA principals were in solidarity with Mrs Oyinloye-Yakubu.
“Everything is cool, calm and collected. The epidemic is a figment of somebody’s wide and riotous imagination. The only thing leadership requires is courage to confront negative news, fake news – say it as it is,” he said

Biochemistry:Work of a biochemist
Definition and Nature of the Work
Biochemists are scientists who study the chemistry of living things. Their work includes studying the complex chemical combinations and reactions involved in metabolism, reproduction, growth, and heredity. Some biochemists do basic research that expands scientific knowledge about the chemistry of living things. Others do applied research—that is, they work to create new products or to solve practical problems. In the field of medicine, for example, biochemists doing basic research may study the ways hormones are formed. Biochemists doing applied research may use the basic findings of hormone formation to develop synthetic hormones that can be produced on a large scale.
Biochemists working in medicine are sometimes called molecular biologists. They study bacteria, viruses, and other organisms to better understand the chemical basis of life. They also determine the effects of chemicals on medical problems such as cancer, aging, or obesity.
Biochemists in nutrition analyze food products to measure their vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and minerals. They research the effects of freezing or cooking and compute the caloric value of foods.
About half of all biochemists work for colleges and universities, where they teach or do research. Many are employed by private firms such as breweries, drug companies, petroleum producers, and manufacturers. Others work for nonprofit research centers or government agencies. A few biochemists are self-employed consultants who advise the government or industry.
Although their jobs may differ widely, almost all biochemists do laboratory research at least some of the time. They plan research projects to test theories or to develop new products or processes. They are often assisted by laboratory technicians or research assistants. Biochemists perform a number of tasks, such as weighing chemicals, filtering liquids, distilling ingredients, and growing cultures of microorganisms. They use a variety of tools and instruments, including test tubes, beakers, flasks, electron microscopes, centrifuges, and spectrophotometers. Sometimes they make use of radioactive isotopes. Biochemists must use exact scientific methods in their work. They are often aided by computerized data. Biochemists generally write up their findings for scientific journals and report them before groups of scientists.

Prime Minister, Boris-Foreign students can now work in UK after graduation
The British Government has said that international students will henceforth be able to stay and work in the UK after graduating in a policy change that had previously restricted the period to four months.
There will be no cap on the number of students who can apply, as those with student visa will be able to apply to switch to a skilled worker visa if they find a job which meets the relevant criteria. The new policy ends one of ex-Prime Minister Theresa May’s most controversial immigration policies which critics argued would deter international students from applying to British institutions and would lead to the loss of bright students who could contribute to the UK after being educated there.
The Guardian UK added that, from next year, all international graduates could qualify for a two-year period to work in the UK, increasing their chances of finding long-term employment after studying.“The measure goes further than the Home Office’s latest immigration white paper, which proposed extending the four-month limit to six months and the limit for those with doctorates to a year,” Guardian stated.

The Kaduna State Government has unveiled plans to employ 25,000 new primary school teachers as parts of efforts to restore dignity and quality to its education sector.
This is after about 21,780 out of 33,000 teachers failed the primary four test administered to test their competence by the State government.
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of the State made this known on Monday when he received a World Bank delegation in his office in Kaduna.
He explained that the recruitment is now necessary due to the acute shortage of qualified primary school teachers in the state.
The governor stated that his administration would disengage about 20,000 unqualified primary school teachers to restore confidence in public schools.
His words: “We tested our 33,000 primary school teachers, we gave them primary four exams and required they must get at least 75 per cent but am sad to announce that 66 per cent of them failed to get the requirements.“The hiring of teachers in the past was politicized and we intend to change that by bringing in young and qualified primary school teachers to restore the dignity of education in the state.”He stressed that teachers would be redeployed across the state to balance the issue of teacher-pupil ratio.
“We have a challenge with the teacher-pupil ratio in the urban schools; there is concentration of teachers that are not needed.‘’In some LGAs, it’s a teacher pupil ratio of 1-9 while in some places it’s 1-100,” he said. The governor said that in a bid to improve the education sector, the school Directors decided to enroll their children in public schools starting from this academic session.

Asuu Rejects one month salary given to them:LAUTECH
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other workers’ unions at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, (LAUTECH) have rejected the resolve by the school’s Governing Council to pay workers only one month’s salary out of the 12 months being owed.
The Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of the university, Alhaji Muraina Alesinloye, who led workers to the meeting held between the JAC and the Governing Council, said the workers insisted that the university should pay at least three months’ salaries.
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the university, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, who doubles a former Head of Service of the Federation and was represented at the meeting by a member of the council, Prof. Olaide Adedokun, was quoted to have said that the council had approved the payment of one month salary to all workers through cheques.
Alesinloye said the JAC, which comprised the Senior Staff Union of Universities, the Non-Academic Staff Union and National Association of Academic Technicians, also said their members would not collect their salaries via cheques.
He said, “The Governing Council held a meeting with us today Monday and Prof. Adedokun, who represented the Chairman of the Council, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, said the council had agreed to pay us one month’s salary now and pay another month on October 20 and pay the third month before the end of October.“But we said no. They are owing us 12 months’ salaries and the people, who have been selling things to us on credit, are now insisting that we should pay what we are owing because government had paid us six months’ salaries.”In September, the management of LAUTECH had directed the lecturers, workers and the students of the university to resume after over eight months’ forced holiday.
After the directive, the workers’ unions in the university said they were not aware of the resumption of the institution, which was then scheduled for Friday, September 15, and as such would not obey the directive of the university authorities.

How to change a Career and also rebrand yourself
How To Rebrand Yourself After A Career Change
by Sabrina Clark -
You don’t have to be told that building and maintaining your brand online is a cornerstone of making things happen in your career. A personal website, social media, industry associations — these are all tucked in your tool belt for communicating to employers and clients about your brand.
Especially if you’re going through a career change, it’s important to give your brand a makeover. Sure, there are transferable skills, but you need to communicate why they are relevant to a new industry.
If you’re going to move to a new career, you need your brand to reflect on why you should be able to. Here’s a guide to getting that done:
Show How Versatile You Are
Do you have qualities and abilities that weren’t showcased in your previous career, but are helpful, or even necessary, in your new one? Point out what those qualities and abilities are online. Don’t be shy. Mention all you can. Don’t stop there. Explain how those qualities and abilities translate to experience or talents that make you useful to your new industry.
Almost half of hiring decision-makers in a Jobvite poll said that they were looking for employees who were “creative.” That means you’ll have an advantage the more you can relate your capabilities to your new career.
“You must always be able to predict what’s next and then have the flexibility to evolve.” – Marc Benioff
Brand For The New Career
Some people focus too much on what they were doing in the career they left. It’s hard to give up on the hard work and lessons learned from previous work. Liz Ryan, a Forbes contributor, tells the story of a seminar attendee who continued to list his previous career in the summary at the top of his resume. That drew questions about why an employer in his new industry would want to hire someone with such a vastly different job description than what the employer was looking for.
